How to Make an Ointment

How to Make an Ointment

Ointments, or salves, contain oils and/or fats, but no water added. An ointment is used for a protective layer over the skin. Depending on the oils you choose, the ointment can be healing or comforting. Using olive, coconut, sweet almond oil or sunflower oil with beeswax to make an ointment is easy to do at home. Make your own oil infusions or purchase the essential oils of your choice.

Things You'll Need:

Beeswax

Vegetable oil

Essential oil

Glass bowl

Sauce pan

Glass ointment jars

Wooden paddle or spoon

1

Put 1 ounce of beeswax and 1/2 cup oil in a clean, glass bowl, and place it over a saucepan of simmering water. Simmer it until the wax is melted.

2

Stir with a wooden paddle or spoon until mixture cools and gets hard, then stir in the essential oils. Use 20 to 30 drops of your favorite essential oil. If you have sensitive skin only use 10 drops.

3

Spoon into small, glass ointment jars. Let cool, seal tightly and store in a cool, dry area.

4

Label your jars with the contents and
date
.

5

Use the ointment within three months. Avoid having the ointment spoil rapidly by storing it in several small containers instead of a large one.

Tips & Warnings

Ointments can be stored for about three months.

Test oils before using them to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction.

If ointment is too soft, reheat and add more beeswax. If it's too hard, reheat and add a small amount of oil until you get the desired effect.

But, I have a tea ritual that I love to do once in a while. It really helps me relax and unwind. I dim the lights or light a few candles and pick a place to stop, relax and rest. In the summer I like to do this outside. Or, I'll just listen to some relaxing music. It really does help.

4

Create the atmosphere that you decided on. Spend 15 to 30 minutes enjoying your quiet time and relaxation.

Tips & Warnings

Some people like to write in their journal, pray or do something spiritual, or even do some stretches or yoga.

How to Minimize your Hips

How to Minimize your Hips

Are you frustrated with your wide derriere? Well, thanking dressing to minimize your hips and behind is simple if you heed to basic elements of art and the premises of optical illusions. Here are some tips for hiding the fact that you're one of Queen's beloved "fat-bottomed girls":

Step
1

*Never wear monochromatic outfits...unless your top is several shades lighter than your pants or skirt. If your top is not noticeably lighter than what you're wearing on the bottom, then your pear shape will be obviously. Always make sure that your pants or skirt are darker than your blouse or

sweater

. Remember that, thankfully, dark colors recede. But don't think that means you're doomed to wearing black pants for the rest of your life; you can try a wide variety of darker colors, like burgundy, navy, chocolate, forest green, and deep purple.

Step
2

*Accessorize up top: If you want to look flashy, then wear big earrings, a beautiful scarf around your neck, or a great necklace---but don't wear anything that draws attention to your hips! This means no belts or scarves slung around your hips. Try to draw as much attention to your face, neck, chest, and/or shoulders, instead. Nice jewelry and padded bra are probably your best bets.

Step
3

*Avoid wide back pockets: The more details are on your behind, the attention it will receive, so keep back pockets medium-sized with little or no embroidery, glitter, buttons, lace, or anything else that will draw people's eyes to your backside. But also avoid pants without any pockets, as they will make your behind seem like an endless expanse.

Step
4

*Beware of wedgies: With wide hips and chubby bottoms, wedgies are a sad reality, but they don't have to be a regular occurrence. Before your purchase pants, try them on in a three-way mirror and be weary of unsightly puckering.

Step
5

*Evade dresses that fan out at the hips: Buy dresses whose skirts fan out either at the waste or below the hips---not at the hips. Obviously, if the dress fans out at the hip, that's the part of you people will notice most. If possible, put on a colorful shrug, cardigan, or jacket to draw further attention away from your hips.

Step
6

*Wear longish shirts: Avoid shirts that show midriff, as they will only accentuate your hip area. Wear shirts that cover at least a third of your behind, but make sure that they are not made in a bulky material. Opt for fabrics like silk, polyester, or plain cotton. If you do want to wear a top made of a bulkier material, make sure it's slightly shorter, but brightly colored or festively patterned so that it draws the focus up top.

Step
7

*Never wear mini-skirts: Chances are, if you have big hips, you have big thighs, so if you want to reveal skin, make it up top instead of down below. Short skirts will emphasize your wide hips, big bottom, and chubby thighs, so buy skirts that fall no more than about two inches above the knee. Skirts that fall at the knee or mid-calf are probably the most flattering cuts for you.

Tips & Warnings

No matter how big you may be below the beltline, there is hope---all it takes is a little imagination!

How to Minimize Purse Baggage

How to Minimize Purse Baggage

Be honest: does your purse weigh more than a small child? Does it visibly weigh down one side of your body? Unless you are traveling away from home for long hours, you really don't need to overload your purse (and even then, there are appropriate alternative bags). Here are some suggestions for how to clean out and minimize purse baggage.

Step
1

Dump out your purse. Sort its contents into three piles: one for things you use every day, one for things you don't use as often and one for things you haven't used in a week. Remove the items in the last pile from your purse.

Step
2

Every few days, make sure to remove the extra stuff from your purse, including things that have another home: extra change (buy a piggy bank), receipts, tampons (if it's not that time of the month), napkins and so on.

Step
3

Throw trash away, your purse is not a Dumpster by default. It might be convenient to shove that gum wrapper in there, but they build up.

Step
4

Don't keep your life in your bag. There's no need to carry your entire makeup bag, your homework, a book, a hairbrush, a first-aid kit and camera on you at all times. Unless you have an infant with you, don't prepare for all the small stuff. Each morning choose what you really need for that day. Staple
beauty
products, a wallet, a phone and glasses are understandable.

Step
5

Decide on a reasonably sized purse, you won't be as apt to over-stuff it as with a large bag. Also, the more often you change your purse, the less likely it will accumulate extra junk and clutter. Keep yourself organized, clean, realistic and try to avoid doing your daily lifting with your purse.

How to Measure When Choosing Bras

How to Measure When Choosing Bras

Getting the right bra size is important. You must learn the correct way to measure in order to find out your proper bra size. There are different ways and methods of measuring. The following is the most common way of measuring for bra size and the one that gives the best results.

Step
1

Use a tape measure to measure under your breast, around the ribcage. Ensure that the tape measure is flat all the way around and is not twisted. Make a note of this measurement.

Step
2

Determine the measurement around the fullest part of your breast by using a tape measure. Again, ensure that the tape measure is not twisted. Make note of this measurement.

Step
3

Figure out your band size. The first measurement is your band size. If you measured 34 inches, then the first part of your bra size will be 34.

Step
4

Add five to this first measurement. Then subtract the two measurements to find your cup size. One inch is A, two inches is a B, three inches is a C, and so on.

Step
5

Try on different

bras

to determine if the size is accurate. Different companies have different sizing. Find one that is comfortable and gives you adequate support.

Tips & Warnings

Try using a bra size calculator. Various websites use these. You put in your measurements and it gives you the correct size. This is especially useful if you know what brand of bra you want to purchase.

How to Measure the Body for a Bathing Suit

How to Measure the Body for a Bathing Suit

Quality bathing suits no longer come in just small, medium and large. There is a wide range of sizes designed to fit every woman's curves. Measuring the bust, waist, hips and torso is necessary to achieve a good fit for a swimsuit. Accurate measurements are essential to determine the correct size of swim attire.

Things You'll Need:

Tape measure

Step
1

Enlist the help of a friend when measuring your body. This will allow you to maintain good posture during the process and improve your accuracy.

Step
2

Measure yourself while wearing just your underwear. You will get inaccurate numbers if you attempt to measure over clothing.

Step
3

Find your accurate bust measurements by ensuring the tape is positioned around the fullest part of your breasts. Keep your arms relaxed as this measurement is being taken, and do not hold your breath.

Step
4

Record all your specific measurements on a piece of paper that you will take with you when shopping for a bathing suit. Don't rely on your memory. Compare the measurements with a bathing suit sizing chart if your shop has one.

Step
5

Measure your hips carefully. Be sure to find the fullest area of this part of your body and keep your heels together during the measuring process.

Step
6

Take an accurate measurement of your torso first. This is important for getting a one-piece suit that fits correctly. Run the measuring tape from your shoulder, and take it down diagonally over your front, between your legs and then back up to your shoulder again.

Step
7

Get your waist measurement by running the tape around the narrowest point of your mid-section. This is the area from which you naturally bend. Make sure the tape measure is not twisted and that it lays flat on this area while you are reading from it.

Step
8

Try on all suits you are considering purchasing. You may find that even with the most accurate measurements, your particular size will vary between suits. You also want to make sure that the suits you choose flatter your body, as a good fit does not automatically ensure a good look.

Tips & Warnings

Never rush while you are being measured for a swimsuit, as it is easy to mistake a calculation by an inch or so when you are in a hurry.

Don't assume a snug suit is the wrong size. You want a bathing suit to have a snug, but not tight, fit when it is new and dry.

How to Measure For a Bra

How to Measure For a Bra

Underwire bra,
sports
bra, push-up bra...no matter the type you choose, a properly fitted bra enhances your silhouette and provides support that can prevent back and posture problems. Follow these steps to correctly fit yourself for a bra.

Things You'll Need:

Flexible measuring tape

Step
1

Measure under your breasts, around your ribcage. Add 4 inches to determine your band size. An alternative method is to measure above your breast, under your arms. Either method is fine, but the result needs to be an even number. If it is an odd number, add 1.

Step
2

Measure over your breasts at the fullest point. Do not pull the measuring tape tightly, rather hold it loosely so that you can breathe easily. Make sure to hold the tape level.

Step
3

Subtract your band measurement from your fullest point measurement to determine your cup size. If the measurements are the same, you are cup size AA. You go up a cup size for each additional inch of difference. For example, 1 inch difference equals A cup, 2 inch difference equals B cup, 3 inch difference equals C cup and 4 inch difference equals D cup.

Step
4

Visit the lingerie section of a department store or a Victoria's Secret store at your local mall, if you are uncertain about your measuring skills. A salesperson will be happy to help you measure for the correct bra size.

Tips & Warnings

Your bra size will change over time. Re-measure approximately every 6 months to a year or if your bra seems to be fitting incorrectly.

A properly fitted bra will not be tight. Underwire bras should not dig into your breasts.

How to Measure Dress Size

How to Measure Dress Size

If you are going to purchase a dress on the Internet or from a mail order catalogue, you should know what size you need. Before ordering that new dress, take some time to measure yourself with a cloth tape measure.

Step
1

Wear a comfortable fitting bra when you measure your bra size. Wrap the tape measure under your bust and record the number. Add 5 inches to that number to determine your bra size.

Step
2

Measure your chest at the fullest point of your bust line. The tape measure should be kept horizontal and your arms should be down. Subtract your bra size from your bust line size to determine your cup size.

Step
3

Wrap the tape measure around your waistline to determine your waist size. Your waistline is the thinnest point on your waist, just above your hip bones. If you are not sure where your waistline is, feel for it while swinging one of your legs forward and back.

Step
4

Take your hip measurement at the fullest point of your hips. The tape measure should fall over your backside when measuring your hips. This area is approximately 7 to 9 inches below your waist, depending on your height.

Step
5

Relax your arm down by your side to measure your sleeve length. Place the tape measure at the back of your neck and measure down the back of your arm to the bend of your wrist.

Tips & Warnings

If you do not have a cloth tape measure, use a piece of string to take the measurements. Mark the string and then measure it with a straight ruler.

The length of the dress that you purchase is not as important since length can be altered through hemming. Most dresses are sold in regular and petite lengths. Petite is typically considered anyone under 5 feet 3 inches.
